Developing a Set of Standards for Teaching Assistants

On Tuesday 28 October 2014, the Department for Education released a new consultation about developing a set of standards for teaching assistants, similar to those already in place for teachers and higher level teaching assistants.

The consultation document can be seen below:

Developing a Set of Standards for Teaching Assistants Call for Evidence

The consultation asks for teachers, teaching assistants, parents and others with an interest in education to submit their ideas about the proposal. Today, I submitted my response.

Time will tell if this becomes a positive step towards further professionalising the vital work that teaching assistants do in schools across the UK, or if it becomes another stick with which to beat (underperforming?) schools.

Do you think the consultation is necessary? A good idea? A bad one? How would you like to see the roles of teaching assistants develop?

If you would like your voice to be heard, submit your response to the consultation.
